Avoid This Common Mistake with Your DOT Account
Share

If you're pursuing NRCME certification or recertification and are unable to access your DOT account, do not create a second DOT account. Doing so will delay the certification process.
Your NRCME Account and National Registry Number
When your NRCME account is created, it’s assigned a 10-digit National Registry Number (also known as an Eligibility number by the testing companies). This number is tied to your federal profile and remains your unique identifier for as long as you're in the program. Creating a second account disrupts this continuity and will trigger eligibility issues within the FMCSA system.
What to Do If You Can’t Access Your DOT Account
If you're locked out of your FMCSA DOT account:
- Use the password reset feature on the FMCSA login page to regain access.
- If you no longer have access to the email address on file with the FMCSA, send an email to FMCTECHSUP@DOT.GOV requesting assistance with updating your email address.
- The FMCSA can be slow to respond, so it’s a good idea to follow up every couple of days with the same email to prompt action.
If you’ve already created a second account:
- Email FMCTECHSUP@DOT.GOV and explain the situation.
- Request that the duplicate second account be deleted and ask for help accessing your original account.
- Once they respond, they will guide you through updating your contact information and restoring access.
You may also try calling the NRCME directly at (617) 494-3003 between 9AM and 5PM EST, Monday to Friday. When you call them, press option 2 at the first greeting and then press 6 when the second greeting starts., but be aware: their phone lines are often tied up due to high call volumes and limited staffing. Email is typically more efficient.
